Having read the article it is clear that this was an amazing accomplishment, and that it only took 7 years! Mr. Pistorio is obviously a very talented man. My only concern is that it at the base of a very active volcano one that erupted just last month! Christy
It seems like a large part of the Etna Valley's develoment and success has come from the University of Catania. Having the University so close is an obvious influx of young, educated, and highly skilled people. This is an advantage also because young and enthusiastic people have a lot of fresh ideas and the capabilities to work on R&D.
It is great to see that two governmental bodies came together to develop and implement the plans for Etna Valley. It's amazing what can be done, so quickly, when people work together and plan accordingly. Thanks for the photos of Italy today!
It's a very good example that not only in Silicon Valley but also in Europe entrepreneurial firms can have big achievements on new technologies. Cooperation with the university also added a value with young people's creativity and farseeing. Gulver Karamemis
In Taiwan, we also have the same example as Etna Valley. It's called "Hsinchu Science Park." There are also two famous universities here “National Tsing Hua University” and “National Chiao Tung University” which focus on expertise of technology. Taiwan is famous for its IT industries, and Hsinchu Science Park plays a very important role. There many famous and big technology companies established here. They combine some of their resources and capabilities to create mutual competitive strategy.
TSMC is one of leading technology companies. It manufacturers semi-conduct products and sell them to the whole world. They also have many projects cooperating with these two universities. It can appeal many talents which graduated from these schools work for them. There are also other technology companies working on the connecting between the industry and academy. Applying to the concept of cooperating strategy, I think Hsinchu Science Park is a very successful example.
Etna valley is good example of co-operative efforts to get National advantage. But I doubt if this model can be replicated elsewher in the world with equal sucess. Govermnets should restict to providing finance, infrastructure and removimg beaurocratic hurdles. In India lot of people believe that Information technology sector became succesful only bacause goverment did not play any role in it. With advent of special economic zones there is higher possibility that such intitives will be tried and it will be interesting to watch how they perform. But again equally strong research support from universities is critical. I wonder what will be the revenue sharing model amomg such firms and how long it will take to braek even.
Maybe it's just because I was a history major, but I think that it's really interesting that Catania, a city with such historical significance, is now a major technical, industrial center. It has become a hub for companies in technologies, electronics, information, and communications, as well as pharmaceuticals. And this was a city that was once part of the Greek and Roman empires.
