Since Chapter 7 is about acquisition strategies here is some news about a recent acquisition...

"Smucker buys Folgers"

It will be interesting to see if this acquisition from Proctor & Gamble will be successful. Richard Smucker (President and co-chief executive of Smucker) seems to think the products "complement" each other as the Smucker brand produces breakfast foods and Folgers is known for coffee.

P&G had announced in January that it would "split off" the Folgers brand in order to focus on its "higher growth businesses, such as health and beauty". It seems likely that this could be an extension of their strategy to build the Crest Pro-Health brand which was created after P&G acquired the Gillette Company in 2005.

I think it was interesting to see in this chapter how globally focused firms throughout the world have become. Manchester United is the perfect example of this. Manchester United is a club soccer team in England, but it's owned by Malcolm Glazer, an American, and sponsored by Nike, an American company.
